Geranium Water: The Complete Guide

What it is

Géran is a hydrosol made by steam-distilling the leaves and stems of rose geranium. It is not geranium essential oil mixed with water and alcohol. It is a small-batch, first distillation, with the plant's own essential oil left in.

Where Roseau feels soft and floral, Géran feels cool and fresh. Its scent is green and herbal, so men who don't want to smell like flowers love it too.

Where it comes from

The geranium grows wild in northern Tunisia. It is gathered by hand and distilled in Béja by Amin, the same master distiller who makes our Roseau, who holds a Ph.D. in flower-water distillation.

How to use it

  1. Cleanse. Wash, or oil-cleanse with Hoba.
  2. Mist and tap. Mist Géran over face and neck and tap it in with your fingertips, or sweep it on with a cotton round.
  3. Seal while damp. Press in Hoba, or Black Seed for blemish-prone skin, before it dries.

More ways to use Géran

  • Aftershave. Cools razor burn and smells fresh, not floral.
  • After waxing, peels or a long day in the sun. A cooling, comforting mist.
  • Hot flashes. Keep a bottle in your bag or the fridge for a cooling spritz.
  • A fresh-up. Spray on hands, feet and underarms to feel fresh during the day.
  • Body masque. Mix with Argil for a cooling clay wrap.

The chemistry

Géran carries trace amounts of the aromatic compounds that give rose geranium its scent, in a gentle water base.

Component In Géran Why it matters
Citronellol Main aromatic compound Fresh, green-rosy scent
Geraniol and linalool Present in small amounts Bright, herbal notes
Retained geranium oil Kept in, not removed Fuller scent and more of the plant's character
pH Slightly acidic, like skin Comfortable after washing with tap water

Who it's for

  • Oily, combination and blemish-prone skin.
  • Skin that flushes, heats up or feels stressed.
  • Teens, and men who shave.
  • Anyone who prefers a green, herbal scent to a floral one.

For professionals

Géran is a natural fit after waxing, extractions or peels, as a cooling compress, and for clients who flush easily. Alternate it with Roseau, or blend the two.

Storage and shelf life

Sealed, Géran keeps for 2-3 years. Once opened, enjoy it within 12 months. Keep it out of hot sun; chilling it makes it even more refreshing.

Safety

Géran has a stronger natural scent than Roseau. If you are very sensitive to scent, patch test first.

For external use only. Patch test any new product: apply a little to your inner forearm once a day for two days. If you notice redness, itching or swelling, rinse with cool water and stop using it. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing or under a doctor's care, check with your doctor first.

Questions

Is Géran good for sensitive skin?

Yes. It is just geranium water with its own essential oil, nothing added. A light mist cools and calms skin that flushes or reacts easily. If you are very sensitive to scent, patch test first.

Géran or Roseau: which one is for me?

Roseau tones and refreshes, Géran cools and balances. Dry or mature skin often prefers Roseau; oily, combination or flushed skin loves Géran. Many people keep both. Read how to choose.

Can men use it?

Absolutely. It is a favorite aftershave: it cools razor burn and smells fresh, not floral.
