Hand-Blown Glass Apothecary: The Complete Guide
What it is
Our apothecary is a small family of hand-blown glass pieces made for natural skincare: jars for clay and powders, corked amphora bottles for oils and flower waters, a mixing bowl sized for one masque, a funnel and a glass straw that doubles as a dropper.
They are the same glass our oils and perfumes live in. When you refill, decant or mix your own blends, nothing new touches your ingredients.
Where it comes from
Our glass is made in Cairo by a small team of glass-makers, led by Lamyaa, with Mohammed among her makers. They work from glass tubes of even thickness, heating and shaping each piece by breath and hand. There are no molds.
That is why no two pieces are exactly alike. A tiny bubble or a slightly different curve is the signature of real hand-blown glass, not a defect.

Why glass, and why this glass
Natural ingredients are alive in their own way. Cold-pressed oils oxidize, flower waters carry delicate aromatics, and clays can pick up whatever they sit in. So we keep them in the most neutral container there is.
| Borosilicate glass | Plastic | Metal | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reacts with oils, clays or acids | No; it is chemically inert | Can absorb oils and scent over time | Clay and some acids can react with it |
| Handles hot water | Yes, made for lab heat | Can warp | Yes |
| Reusable | For years | Degrades | Yes |
| What's left at the end | Glass and cork | Plastic waste | Metal |
Borosilicate is the same type of glass used in labs and in Pyrex-style cookware. It is made to resist heat and chemicals.
How to use each piece
- Jars (0.5 or 1 oz, clear or frosted). Argil, Poudre de Barie, a balm or your own blend. Frosted jars keep light off what's inside, and the frosting won't rub or wash off.
- Amphora bottles (1 oz or 0.2 oz, corked). Decant oils or flower waters for travel, or keep a blend you mixed yourself. The 0.2 oz holds a week of Barie in your purse.
- Mixing bowl. Exactly the size for one masque: a teaspoon of Argil, a splash of Roseau or Géran, a few drops of oil.
- Funnel. Pours oils, waters and even heavy clay into a narrow neck without a mess.
- Straw / pipette. Stir with it, or dip it, cap the top with your finger, and lift a few drops.
A masque, start to finish
- Scoop. Use an olivewood spoon to add 1-2 teaspoons of Argil to the mixing bowl. Dry tools keep water out of the jar.
- Add water. Add Roseau or Géran a little at a time until it looks like smooth yogurt.
- Boost. Add a pinch of Poudre de Barie for polish, or 2-3 drops of oil for dry skin.
- Apply and rinse. Smooth it on with the olivewood spatula, leave 5-10 minutes, rinse with warm water.
Care
- Glass: top rack of the dishwasher, or warm soapy water.
- Cork: wash by hand and let it dry completely before you close a jar or bottle.
- Handling: treat it like a good wine glass, not a mason jar. It is sturdier than it looks, but glass is glass.
- Frosted pieces are a touch thinner than clear ones, because frosting takes off a fine top layer. Handle them with the same care.
For professionals
Spas and estheticians use the bowl, funnel and jars as their treatment-room setup: mix masques fresh in front of the client and decant retail-size oils without plastic. The bowl, funnel and straw are included as complimentary starting accessories in our Spa Back Bar. Ask us about wholesale.
Questions
Is hand-blown glass fragile?
It's sturdier than it looks. Treat it like a nice wine glass, not a mason jar.
Why cork instead of a plastic cap?
Cork seals well, lets natural products breathe and keeps plastic off your shelf.
Can I put hot water in it?
Borosilicate handles heat well. Avoid sudden extreme changes, like boiling water into a cold jar.
Will mine look exactly like the photo?
Close, but never identical. Each piece is shaped by hand, so small bubbles and variations are part of it.
Do you sell larger sizes?
Not yet. For refills, ask us about our 32 oz refills.
