Poudre de Barie: The Complete Guide
What it is
When prickly pear seeds are cold-pressed for Barie oil, the press can only get so much out. About half of the oil stays locked inside the seed cores. Instead of throwing them away, we mill them into a fine, silky powder. That is Poudre de Barie: one ingredient, zero waste.
It is a manual exfoliant unlike any scrub. There are no sharp shells and no beads. Because it is so oil-rich, it polishes and moisturizes at the same time.
Where it comes from
The seeds come from the same wild Tunisian cactus forests as Barie oil, pressed by Tareq, our maker in Tunisia. After pressing, the seed cores are milled and packed in hand-blown glass jars with a cork.

How to use it
On its own, Poudre de Barie is a clumpy powder that won't stick to skin. Mix it, and it shines.
As a gentle polish
- Mix. In your palm or a small glass bowl, mix a pinch of powder with 3-4 drops of Hoba or Barie into a soft paste.
- Massage. Massage over damp skin in slow circles for 30-60 seconds. Use more oil for a softer polish, less for a deeper one.
- Rinse. Rinse with warm water. Mist Roseau and press in your usual oil.
As a nourishing clay masque
Mix Poudre de Barie 1:1 with Argil, add Roseau to make a smooth paste, and apply as a masque. As you rinse, massage gently for a light exfoliation.
The chemistry
Poudre de Barie is the seed itself, so it carries the same nourishing compounds as Barie oil, plus soft plant fiber that does the polishing.
| Component | Poudre de Barie | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Residual prickly pear seed oil | About half the seed's oil | Moisturizes while it polishes |
| Linoleic acid and vitamin E | Carried in that oil | Barrier-friendly fatty acids and antioxidants |
| Milled seed fiber | Fine and soft | Lifts dull surface cells without sharp edges |
Who it's for
- Dry, mature or dull skin that wants a polish without stripping.
- Anyone who finds scrubs too harsh: adjust the strength with more or less oil.
- Not for broken skin or active, inflamed breakouts.
For professionals
Use Poudre de Barie as an enzyme-free manual exfoliation step, or fold it into an Argil treatment for clients with dry or mature skin. Always mix in glass, wood or ceramic.
Storage and shelf life
Keep the jar tightly corked and dry. Poudre de Barie has a 2-year shelf life. Mix only what you need each time; mixed paste doesn't keep.
Safety
Exfoliate gently and no more than twice a week. Avoid the eye area and broken or irritated skin.
For external use only. Patch test any new product: apply a little to your inner forearm once a day for two days. If you notice redness, itching or swelling, rinse with cool water and stop using it. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing or under a doctor's care, check with your doctor first.
Questions
Can I use it on its own?
Not really. On its own it is a clumpy powder, like almond flour, and it won't stick to skin. Mix it with a few drops of oil or with Argil.
How is it different from other scrubs?
There are no sharp shells or beads. It is soft and oil-rich, so it polishes and moisturizes at the same time.
How often should I use it?
Once or twice a week. Use more oil for a softer polish, less for a deeper one.
