The Hidden Truth About Cheap Oils

Here is what I learned from 15 years of traveling across the Mediterranean and going to the source to bring the finest ingredients for skin & hair.

When people ask me why Katari oils cost more than the $4 bottles of the 'same' oils they can buy on Amazon, I smile because I have seen exactly where both types of oils come from.
 

And the difference is everything.


For the last 15 years, I have traveled across the Mediterranean: Egypt, Tunisia, France, Italy, Sicily to find the purest ingredients crafted by artisans whose methods haven’t changed for centuries. I sit with them. I visit their farms. I watch every step of the process.

 

And what I’ve learned is simple:
Oils are a commodity.
Quality is an art.

The Commodity Oil Problem

Most oils on the market come from the global commodity system. That system is designed for volume, not quality. The goal is to press as much oil as possible for the lowest cost possible.
 

Here’s what happens behind the scenes:

👉 Producers warm the seeds to increase yield.
👉 Some add moisture to soften the seeds and extract even more oil.
👉 Some cut oils with cheaper fillers.
👉 Others buy old inventory and re-bottle it.
 

None of this is illegal. None of it shows up on a label.
But all of it destroys the nutrients your skin needs.
 

This is why so many people think:
“Oils don’t work for me.”
They have simply never experienced a real oil.

How Certifications Can Mislead You

Here’s something surprising I have learned over the years of working with dozens of makers: 

A producer can buy an Organic certification, even if the oil is made using shortcuts that kill the vitamins in it.
 

Meanwhile, artisans who do everything correctly: hand-cleaning seeds, cold-pressing with no heat, filtering slowly, pressing in micro-batches mostly cannot afford such certifications that cost thousands of dollars per year. 
 

Organic doesn’t always mean better.
Artisan does.

The Artisans I Work With

Every Katari oil comes from a real person, a family that has passed down their craft for generations and artisans that dedicated their whole lives to their crafts and often just one ingredient that they mastered.

 

These artisans:

  • use ancient cold-pressing techniques
  • refuse to heat the seeds
  • press small batches only when seeds are fresh
  • store oils carefully in the dark
  • never stretch or dilute the final product

This process yields very little oil, but the oil it does yield is incredibly potent, full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and compounds your skin can actually recognize and use.
